Ragdoll cats are a fairly new cat breed, having been developed in the mid 1960's in America by a woman named Ann Baker. They are a large cat (males can weigh up to 20lbs), with mat-resistant fur and a wonderful laid-back temperament. The name "ragdoll" comes from their tendency to go as limp as a ragdoll when they are picked up, although this is more a sign of their docile nature than a specific genetic trait. It has been claimed that Ragdolls are insensitive to pain but anyone who has ever stepped on their Ragdoll accidentally will tell you that this isn't true! They do seem to put up with more manhandling than other breeds, but this varies with individual cats. Ragdolls are available in several colours :
Tabbies, Tortoiseshells (torties) and Tortoiseshell Tabbies (torbies) in the above colours and patterns are also now available. If you would like to find out more about this wonderful breed, then take a look at The British Ragdoll Cat Club webpage. |
